Smoke Alarm Installation in Melbourne

Victorian law requires smoke alarms that meet Australian Standard AS 3786, and homes built after August 1997 must have them mains-powered with a battery backup. We fit photoelectric alarms as standard because they detect the slow, smouldering fires that start at night faster than ionisation alarms do, and we interconnect them so that when one sounds, they all sound.

Victorian law requires every home to have working smoke alarms that meet Australian Standard AS 3786, positioned on or near the ceiling of every storey. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have them connected to mains power with a battery backup; older homes may still run on battery alone. Interconnected alarms — where one sounding sets off all the others — are required in new builds and major renovations, and strongly recommended everywhere else. We fit photoelectric alarms as standard. They are not a legal requirement, but they detect slow, smouldering fires — the type most likely to start at night — faster than ionisation alarms, and that is the fire that kills people in their sleep. Every installation comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Sound Familiar?

Battery-only alarms

Homes built after 1 August 1997 need mains-powered alarms with battery backup. Older homes may still use battery-only alarms.

Alarms older than 10 years

Smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan. If yours are older, they should be replaced regardless of whether they appear to work.

Rental property compliance

Landlords must ensure compliant alarms before each new tenancy. We handle the assessment and installation.

Selling your home

Smoke alarm compliance is required before settlement. We can assess and install quickly to keep your sale on track.
