Home EV Charger Installation: What to Expect

Thinking about installing a home EV charger? Here's what the process involves, what to look for in an installer, and why you might not need a switchboard upgrade.

## Why Install a Home Charger? Charging your EV at home is more convenient and more cost-effective than relying on public chargers. A dedicated home charger delivers a full charge overnight — and with off-peak electricity rates, it's significantly cheaper than petrol. The question most people have is: what's involved in getting one installed? ## What Type of Charger Do You Need? Home EV chargers come in two main types: **Level 1 (standard power point)** — plugs into a standard 10A outlet. Slow charging — typically 10–15km of range per hour. Fine for occasional top-ups but not practical as your primary charging method. **Level 2 (dedicated charger)** — a hardwired unit installed by a licensed electrician. Delivers 7–22kW depending on the model and your switchboard capacity. Typically adds 40–100km of range per hour. This is what most EV owners install. ## Do You Need a Switchboard Upgrade? This is the question we get asked most often — and the honest answer is: not always. Whether you need a switchboard upgrade depends on your existing board's capacity and the charger's power requirements. In many cases, we can install a home EV charger by adding a dedicated circuit to your existing switchboard without a full upgrade. We assess this during the site visit and will only recommend an upgrade if it's genuinely necessary for safe operation. ## What Does the Installation Involve? 1. **Site assessment** — we inspect your switchboard, cable routes, and garage setup 2. **Switchboard check** — we assess whether your existing board can handle the charger load 3. **Installation** — the charger is mounted, cables run, and the dedicated circuit connected 4. **Testing and certification** — full operational test and Certificate of Electrical Safety issued Most installations are completed in a single visit. ## What to Look for in an Installer EV charger installation must be done by a licensed electrician — not a handyman or the charger supplier. Make sure your installer: - Holds a current A-Grade electrical licence - Issues a Certificate of Electrical Safety - Assesses your switchboard before quoting We tick all three boxes.
